Pottery Classes for Beginners in NYC: What to Expect

A beginner learning to center clay on a pottery wheel during a class

Trying pottery for the first time is genuinely exciting — and a little intimidating if you do not know what to expect. The good news: beginner pottery classes are designed for people who have never touched clay. You do not need any skill, any supplies, or any artistic background to make something you are proud of.

This guide walks you through what actually happens in a beginner pottery class in NYC, the difference between wheel throwing and hand building, what to wear, and how to book your first class at Gotham Pottery in Manhattan.

Do you need any experience to take a pottery class?

No. Our workshops are built for complete beginners. An instructor demonstrates each step and gives you hands-on help throughout the class. The whole point of a beginner class is to learn — wobbly first attempts are expected and encouraged.

Wheel throwing vs. hand building: which should you try?

Beginner pottery generally comes in two flavors, and both are great places to start:

  • Wheel throwing: The classic pottery experience — centering a lump of clay on a spinning wheel and pulling it up into a bowl, cup, or vase. It feels like the movies, takes a little practice to control, and is incredibly satisfying once it clicks.
  • Hand building: Shaping clay by hand using techniques like pinching, coiling, and slab work. No wheel required, very forgiving, and great if you want more control or prefer a calmer pace.

If you are not sure, wheel throwing is the iconic first-timer experience, while hand building is a relaxed, low-pressure introduction. Our Hand Building Class ($65) includes pinch-pot, slab, and coil techniques with same-day painting and glazing — no wheel required. You can always try the other on your next visit.

What happens in a beginner class, step by step

  1. 1.Welcome and apron up — you will get settled at your station.
  2. 2.Demonstration — your instructor shows the core techniques for the class.
  3. 3.Hands-on making — you create your own piece with help whenever you need it.
  4. 4.Finishing — you trim and refine your work and choose glaze colors.
  5. 5.Firing and pickup — we fire and glaze your pieces and let you know when they are ready to take home.

What to wear and bring

  • Clothes you do not mind getting clay on — we provide aprons, but pottery is messy.
  • Short-ish nails make shaping clay much easier.
  • Tie back long hair so it stays clear of the wheel.
  • Closed-toe shoes are most comfortable.
  • Bring nothing else — clay, tools, and materials are all included.

How long is a class and how much does it cost?

Most beginner workshops run a couple of hours, which is plenty of time to learn the basics and make a piece without feeling rushed. At Gotham Pottery, workshops start at $65 and include instruction, clay, and the glazing and firing of your finished work.

Will I actually take home something I made?

Yes. After your class, your pieces are dried, fired, glazed, and fired again — a process that takes a couple of weeks. We will let you know when your work is ready for pickup. Your first mug or bowl becomes a daily reminder of the day you tried something new.
